# Free Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) Calculator

Calculate your compound annual growth rate in seconds. CAGR measures the average annual growth of a metric over a specified period, assuming profits are reinvested each year.

## What is CAGR?

Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) is the mean annual growth rate of a value over a specified period longer than one year. Unlike simple growth rates that can fluctuate wildly from year to year, CAGR smooths out volatility and provides a single, consistent rate that represents how a metric grew on average each year.

CAGR is widely used by SaaS businesses, investors, and analysts to compare the growth performance of revenue, customer counts, or other key metrics across different time frames.

## How to Calculate CAGR

**Formula**: CAGR = (Ending Value / Beginning Value)^(1 / Number of Years) - 1

Where:
1. **Ending Value** — The final value of the metric at the end of the measurement period
2. **Beginning Value** — The initial value of the metric at the start of the measurement period
3. **Number of Years** — The duration of the measurement period in years

For example, if your annual recurring revenue grew from $1M to $2.5M over 3 years, your CAGR would be (2,500,000 / 1,000,000)^(1/3) - 1 = 35.7%.

## When to Use CAGR

- **Comparing growth across time frames** — CAGR normalizes growth so you can compare a 2-year period against a 5-year period on equal footing
- **Evaluating investment performance** — Determine the annualized return of an investment regardless of year-to-year fluctuations
- **Benchmarking against competitors** — Compare your company's growth rate against industry peers using a standardized measure
- **Forecasting future growth** — Project where a metric will be in the future if current growth trends continue

## CAGR Benchmarks for SaaS

Growth rates vary significantly by stage and size, but general SaaS benchmarks include:

- **Early-stage (pre-$1M ARR)**: 100%+ CAGR is common
- **Growth-stage ($1M-$10M ARR)**: 50-100% CAGR is strong
- **Scale-stage ($10M-$50M ARR)**: 30-50% CAGR is healthy
- **Mature ($50M+ ARR)**: 20-30% CAGR is solid

## Limitations of CAGR

CAGR is a useful simplification, but it has limitations. It assumes smooth, consistent growth and does not capture volatility, seasonality, or periods of decline within the measurement window. Always pair CAGR with other metrics like monthly growth rate and retention rate for a more complete picture of business health.
